I'm on vacation with substandard computer access, so this will have to be short. Rolland Comstock, the prolific collector of modern first editions who built a huge library onto his home to house his 50,000 volume collection, was shot to death earlier this week. Here's a link to the second follow up story about the case. Bizarrely, the first follow up, posted on July 4, has been taken off the Internet and removed from Lexis Nexis. Very odd. Fortunately, I saved a copy and will post the salient details when I have a chance.
I never met Comstock, though I spoke with him many times on the phone and he even wrote an article about collecting Jonathan Franzen for us a few years ago. He was a master at befriending authors and has been mentioned in print by many of his favorites. There are even a few literary characters named after him. He was working on an essay for us about his relationships with authors when he died. Rest in peace.
